Abstract

In British Columbia schools, students of Aboriginal ancestry are underrepresented inscience courses and in the sciences (Ministry of Education, 2002). For mostAboriginal students, this low participation is a barrier to postsecondary educationand limits career opportunities. The Aboriginal Knowledge and Science EducationResearch Project is a collaborative venture between the Aboriginal EducationEnhancements Branch of the Ministry of Education and the University of Victoria. Itwas created to address issues associated with the underrepresentation of Aboriginalpeoples in the sciences. The main purpose of the project is to determine whyAboriginal students are underrepresented in high school biology, chemistry, andphysics classrooms, to find ways to improve their involvement and achievementsignificantly in both elementary and high school science leading to postsecondaryeducation, and to encourage Aboriginal people to consider science-related occupations.
