Abstract

This article examines the phenomenon o f what Halq'emeylem renewal means in thelives ofStodo people today. Stodo Elders emphasize that Stodo identity and worldview are embedded in our near-extinct Halq'emeylem language, which identifies us asa distinct Aboriginal people in Canada. Interviews with nine co-researchers arepresented as poetic monologues that reveal that within a short time, the Stddopersisted against all odds to develop a Halq'emeylem movement to "hold ourlanguage high." In addition to increased self-esteem and pride with the use ofHalq'emeylem, the poetic monologues reveal a reversal o f the trend towardHalq'emeylem extinction and illustrate how Halq'emeylem is increasingly becominga viable part o f our modern Indigneous lifestyles.
