Reflections on Research With, for, and Among Indigenous Peoples

Abstract

This article is a reflection on research with, for, and among Indigenous peoples. The author, an anthropologist of Indigenous descent, attempts to grapple with the various challenges that confront researchers located in mainstream institutions as they pur­ sue respectful research relationships with Indigenous peoples. The strengths and weaknesses of the anthropological method are also discussed from the point of view of the possibility of an Indigenous anthropology. The article concludes by arguing that there is a place for anthropological research in Indigenous communities, but only if anthropologists are willing to commit to participation in the process of decolonization.
