Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The text adheres to the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Essay Guidelines:

  • Maximum two entries per person
  • Paper related to the field of art history/visual culture
  • Provide year, faculty, major/minor, and course number in the body of your email.
  • Minimum 6 and maximum 20 pages in length; 12pt, double-spaced (excluding images, endnotes, bibliography)
  • Full bibliography, proper citations using the Chicago Manual of Style (endnotes preferred)
  • Label all files and images: "Your_Name_Title".docx (e.g. Jane_Doe_Modernity.docx)
  • At least one high-resolution image is recommended to be published alongside your paper
  • If your paper is selected, we will ask you to begin securing image permission rights for any image(s) not in the public domain. We will be hosting an image permissions workshop in late October/early November for all accepted authors to help navigate this process!

Artwork Submission Guidelines:

  • Undergraduate students pursuing a major or minor in Visual Art
  • Must be available throughout the school year for studio visits, photoshoot, and an interview
  • Preference given to students whose submission demonstrates a diverse, critical practice and reveals an evolution of their work over time
  • Artwork may be previously published or unpublished
  • Send images of your work and a 500-word statement of practice

Review Guidelines:

  • You are a current undergraduate student at the University of British Columbia
  • You are writing about a recent exhibition, publication, film, or performance— ideally less than six months in the past. Writing on works which have been shown or published locally is strongly encouraged.
  • Review does not have to be written for a class; however, it should be unpublished (both online and in print)
  • Maximum two entries per person
  • Provide your year, faculty, major/minor, as well as info about the event or publication (i.e., title, location, run-time/date, curator/director/artist/author, date attended) in the body of the email
  • Minimum 500, maximum 1500 words in length; 12pt, double-spaced
  • No bibliography required
  • At least one high-resolution image is recommended to be published alongside your review.
  • If your paper is selected, we will ask you to begin securing image permission rights for any image not in the public domain.
