Students Work: A Discourse Analysis of Writing Center Mission Statements

Abstract

This research report summarizes my current project: a rhetorical analysis of how writing center mission statements represent their undergraduate peer tutors. Using critical discourse analysis, I investigate how the elision of the academic labor of student workers is intimately connected to the larger shift in higher education towards employing contingent faculty.

Andrew Rihn, Stark State College

Andrew Rihn lives in Canton, OH, where he splits his time between working at an artisan bakery and working as a professional writing tutor at Stark State College, a two-year, former tech school. His academic interests focus on identity formation and representation, especially as it applies to writing centers.
