Abstract

Thin layer chromatography allows for the separation of molecules according to their polarity and their interactions with, or affinity for, the mobile and stationary phases. After allowing the mobile phase to move up silica gel plates, a detection reaction is conducted to visualize the products and their displacement on the silica gel plates. It is often used for the identification of compounds following chemical reactions. Here, we describe a method for the visualization of γ-aminobutyric acid, a product of the reaction involving L-glutamate and the glutamate decarboxylase GadB from bacterial cultures.
