Abstract

Canada and South Africa have two very different health care systems.  The principles of universal health care are the cornerstone of the Canadian system.  This is also the basis of South Africa’s public sector.  However, the well-funded private system is contributing to a lack of resources, medical professionals, and adequate facilities in the public system.  This article compares common medical issues and follows thier management in each Country's system, illustrating the different challenges that each faces.  In conclusion, the disparity in the two-tiered system is severely impeding accessibility and quality of care in South Africa’s medical system.  While the Canadian system is not perfect, it stands as an example of a relatively successful model of universal health care.
