About the Journal

Focus and Scope

See Also is a student-run, open access journal devoted to showcasing high quality original research and scholarship created by students at UBC’s iSchool/School of Library, Archival and Information Studies. Issues are published once a year and are dedicated to promoting and disseminating the best student scholarship created in the fields of libraries, archives, information studies, and children’s literature.

See Also is committed to providing a platform for students to gain valuable experience in all aspects of scholarly publishing, as authors, peer reviewers, designers, and editors.

See Also wants your:

• Traditional essays and research papers
• Annotated bibliographies
• Slide decks with presentation notes (these can be videos or animations ideally including narration or narrative text)
• Book reviews
• Journal article reviews
• Academic posters

Peer Review Process

See Also uses a double blind peer review process, where the identity of the authors and the reviewers are hidden from each other. This anonymity attempts to ensure that submissions are objectively evaluated by the reviewers.

Manuscripts submitted to See Also are sent out to a minimum of one reviewer who evaluates the submission based on criteria found within the Review Guidelines. The submission is then either accepted, or sent back to the creators with suggested revisions for improvement. Submissions will be reviewed in a timely manner that will allow authors to make revisions to their submission. Submissions will not be rejected outright if at all possible.

All peer reviewers for See Also are graduate students from UBC’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies. The editors make their best attempt to match submissions with reviewers from the same area of research (e.g. archival submissions reviewed by Masters of Archival Studies students), though this cannot be guaranteed. 

Publication Frequency

See Also is published online once a year.

Open Access Policy

See Also provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Journal History

Late in 2014 the question was asked amongst students at UBC's School of Library, Archival and Information Studies: Why don't we have a student journal? A group was formed, began holding meetings to establish orgnizational and editorial policies, and a professional experience for a student was proposed and accepted by the department. Since then See Also has had a rotating editorial board, as new students take over roles vacated by those who have graduated.
