Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The submission file is in a Microsoft Word format.
  • The submission contains an abstract (approximately 250 words or less) and 4-10 keywords.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

• We accept article-length submissions as well as shorter creative works, such as creative nonfiction essays, artwork, short stories, and poetry. We invite original submissions from undergraduate students, graduate students, scholars (independent or affiliated with a university), community members and anyone else concerned with disability issues. The Graduate Journal of Disability Studies is committed to thinking beyond an academic hierarchy, representing critical and ground-breaking voices both within and outside the university.

• Manuscripts should be submitted in Microsoft Word format and should be no more than 8,000 words. Tables, figures, and any other images included in your manuscript must be accompanied by image descriptions. For an example of how to write image descriptions, please refer here. If you need additional guidance with image descriptions or have any accessibility concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the editor at

• Citations must either be consistent with MLA, APA, ASA, or Chicago guidelines. Authors are responsible for ensuring citations are accurate and consistent with one of the above citation formats.

• Manuscripts must be accompanied by a cover page with the article’s title, the full names of all authors, contact information, and their affiliation. To ensure the integrity of the anonymous peer-review process, author’s names must not appear on any other pages of the manuscript. The authors of the document must delete their names from the text,  with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.

• All pages must be numbered and contain a header with the paper's title.

• Authors should provide an abstract of 250 words or less as well as 4-10 keywords.

• Text must be double-spaced, 12-point, and use the font Times New Roman.

• Content notes (CN) or trigger warnings (TW) are optional, but encouraged on pieces that deal with difficult material. If you need assistance with this, please contact the editor at

• Due to our limited editorial board, only submissions in English will be accepted. This may change in the future, depending on our resources.

• We do not accept submissions under review at other journals. Submissions must not be published elsewhere, in print or online.
