Abstract

This paper will examine the revolutionary contributions of Phoebe Anna Traquair to the Arts and Crafts movement in late 19th-century Europe, highlighting her transformative influence on the perception of textile arts, which are traditionally female-dominated and undervalued due to associations with domesticity. Through a socio-cultural anthropological lens, this paper analyzes Traquair’s most iconic works—her monumental embroidery series The Progress of the Soul, jewelry, and commissioned murals—as part of a broader cultural narrative surrounding art, gender, and social hierarchy. This paper discusses Traquair transcending the gendered limitations of “craft,” redefining the legitimacy and status of women’s decorative and textile arts. By challenging the period's male-dominated artistic norms and helping to elevate textile art to a respected form, Traquair’s legacy endures as a testament to the feminist potential within the Arts and Crafts movement and as a symbol of resistance to the industrialized dehumanization of artistic labor.
