Abstract

Open-source technology offers alternative solutions to traditional closed-source medical software solutions provided by private corporations. This article is a commentary on the benefits of open-source in general, but also a look at the OSCAR McMaster Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system as a case study to demonstrate how open-source is making an impact on improving delivery of healthcare in Canada. Specifically, the quality, cost-effectiveness, security and data interoperability of the OSCAR EMR system are discussed.
