Author Guidelines

We accept conventional essays, creative prose, poetry, visual art and academic reviews. (Objects of review should be no more than 6 months old by the submissions deadline. Exhibition or show reviews should be as recent as possible.) We are always open to new genres and approaches – please contact us if you would like to submit a piece that does not fit readily into any of the above categories.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. All written work must be MS Word-compatible; visual work should be in .jpg format.
  2. All submissions must have a focus on issues that relate directly to our mandate.
  3. Eligible contributors will be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at UBC at the time of submission.
  4. All submissions must comply to the university’s standards regarding academic writing as outlined here.
  5. Poetry, visual art, and creative prose must be accompanied by a brief explanation (~100-200 words) of how it engages with feminism, gender or social justice issues.
  6. Neither previously published material nor any that have been accepted for publication by any source other than Ignite will be accepted.
  7. Once the editing period has come to a close, we will not accept any changes to an accepted paper.
  8. Essays should be MLA formatted. Any essay citing Wikipedia as a source will be automatically disqualified.
